California based natives have to endure hot sweaty summers with the sun blazing down on long hot days while the night’s heat is still smoking throughout the long May through September months. It is too often that we forget that there is some one our community who fight the heat all year round and do so at any given moment. We at SERVPRO of Laguna Beach/Dana Point would like to take a moment to thank all of our local Firefighters for their hard work, sacrifice and endless effort throughout the year. It is through them and their resources that we are able to better understand fire safety for our community. Be sure to take a moment to visit the Laguna Beach local Fire Department page here or the Dana Point Fire Department webpage here.
Based upon information from our local heroes, there are four main fire stations in Laguna Beach and two in Dana Point. These six stations work year round to be ready at a moment’s notice in case an emergency should arise, but to be better prepared, these stations went that extra step to care four our community by providing to us a Disaster Preparedness cheat sheet. It does more than cover Fires. It covers earthquakes, emergency safety kits, floods and even those wild fires that happen from time to time. They even make learning safety fun with a special kids zone here.
The Fire Departments in Dana Point take it further to keep us informed on information such as smoke alarms and just what we need to be on the look out for when it comes to use and maintenance. It is all too often that the disasters we encounter are a direct results from the steps in safety not taken. Also through the Dana Point Fire Website you can access information about SONGS (San Onofre Nuclear Generating Stations), which covers health and safety in Dana Point and in the surrounding cities as well such as San Clemente or San Juan Capistrano.
After all is said and done, with all the information provided to us as a community, what it boils down to is that we wants to say THANK YOU! Thank you to all involved in helping our community stay safe. To the fire fighting crews, the dispatchers who take the emergency calls, to the first emergency responders, the volunteers and the online information teams…THANK YOU! We are proud to work with you those endless hours to help keep our communities safe and disaster ready.
When a large property manager had a fire sprinkler line crack in a building they manage, they knew to call SERVPRO of Laguna Beach. The pipe had cracked on in the ceiling of the third floor flooding the third level. The water then followed the path of least resistance and found the pipe chases in the concrete floors in between levels. This allowed the water to quickly travel down to level 2 and eventually level 1. As the water reached the ceiling of the level below it quickly began to spread out across the firewalls. It also used the piping from the plumbing and electrical conduit to quickly transport it to other areas of the building. The water cascaded into light fixtures, AC duct manifolds and registers. From there it landed on computers, desks and furniture damaging work product and sensitive documents that were the work of professionals like doctors and attorneys. Fortunately the building engineers were able to shut off the fire sprinklers within 10 minutes of the break.
SERVPRO of Laguna Beach responded in force. Within 20 minutes of getting the call our crews arrived with 9 extraction units to quickly remove the standing water from the carpet and terrazzo flooring systems. Once the major water was removed the electrical systems were checked for safe operation. Fortunately the buildings electrical system was not compromised and we were able to pull auxiliary power from a nearby electrical panel. Once the electricity was secured a project manager walked the job with the building engineer showing him the building materials that had soaked up the water and needed to be thoroughly dried to prevent and inhibit mold growth. A drying plan was constructed and the equipment began to make its way to the building.
Initially refrigerant dehumidifiers and air movers were used to quickly remove the excess humidity in the building. However once they reached their maximum drying efficiency, they were quickly replaced with desiccant dehumidifiers. In addition air movement was reduced as materials reached their moisture equilibrium (fancy word for dry normal).
The property manager was shocked. You see, not too long ago they used to use a company that would always demolish any wet building materials, this would result in expensive demo bills, prolonged restoration projects and upset tenants. The property manager would then have to discount rents in order to appease unhappy tenants. Some were even released from their leases. But why was this job any different? This time they selected SERVPRO to perform the mitigation and drying. At the end of the day, once everything was dry and the repair process was to begin, all that was needed was a few drywall patches and to replace the baseboard. The carpets were then cleaned and the final walk through completed.
How long did it take? From the initial call to completion of the restoration was only 7 days. The tenants were happy, the property manager was happy and the building owners were happy. The property manager remarked “from now on I will only call SERVPRO”.
Here at SERVPRO it’s a pleasure to be part of a team dedicated to making customers happy! Check out our crew here or better yet, see what other happy customers had to say about us here.
A few years ago, in March 2013, SERVPRO and the American Red Cross began a partnership that would soon grow into a beautiful community based program. We recently renewed this partnership in January 2016 with a new outlook and new plan in place for how we will be able to help our communities even more. From last year’s push of assisting in a variety of home owners, business owners and commercial property owners in setting up an Emergency Readiness Plan (ERP), to the now working even more closely with supporting Disaster Responders for the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign.
This new way of helping our community is going to be wonderful to focus on the residential community. With our support with the Disaster Responders, it will make it possible for them to assist affected families with quicker relief, better information and more up to date technology by providing trained volunteers, supplies and the proper emergency response vehicles. As a huge bonus, our involvement will also help transform community sites into shelters.
Moving forward, SERVPRO of Anaheim West will be working closer with the local fire departments and fire safety companies to spread the word about the urgent need to be as best prepared as possible for when disaster strikes. We will now be an even bigger part of the community as we hoped we could be prior, as well as being able to continue to provide excellent service for existing services within the program, like ERPs and community based Fundraisers are just a few examples of the continuing work we provide, we will also be allowed to interact with the community on a multitude of levels. Be sure to be on the lookout for your local SERVPRO at the next school function, city fair, fire safety community course and many more to come.

When purchasing a home for your family, one would hope that the home is in good condition and safe from all pollutants. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. SERVPRO of Dana Point was recently contacted by a local homeowner who was reaching out to us after noticing some discoloration in the flooring of his closet. He thought it might be related to a water leak of some sort. The sad result was that some water in the floor wasn’t the only thing that was discovered.
In an effort to sell the home the prior home owner had remodeled the bathrooms. The shower was improperly built using drywall and then tiling over the drywall. This type of installation is incorrect and will not hold water. Needless to say, every time they used the shower, the drywall was saturated in moisture. Once it reached maximum saturation the water then started to leak into other rooms, including the kitchen, lower bathroom, living room, adjacent bedroom and pantry. Capillary action caused the water to wick up the drywall and into other semi-porous building materials of the home. The constant supply of water and building material acted as a type of food source for the mold to be amplified. Extensive mold remediation had to be done throughout the home.
The process: Immediately, containment was set up with HEPA filtration and negative air pressure. The drywall, wood flooring, baseboard, door jambs and cabinetry all had to be removed and properly disposed of, with careful consideration being given so as to avoid cross contaminating the unaffected areas of the home. Mold growth on the framing was extensive. The framing was cleaned, sanded and HEPA vacuumed several times over to remove the extensive mold build up. After the physical removal of the mold the contained area was cleaned using wet wipe methods and HEPA vacuuming to ensure the removal of all mold spores that could be in the air or settled on other services.
Once the clean up process was complete an Industrial Hygienist then collected tape lifts and air samples to be examined in the laboratory. This is done to determine if the home is safe for the home owner and his family to return. The Industrial Hygienist gave the all clear and the homeowner and his family were able to move back home promptly. Over the next six weeks we performed extensive reconstruction to help this family get their kitchen and bathrooms back. Using the correct shower building methods of water proofing, mortar bed and tile installation to prevent this type of damage from ever happening again, SERVPRO of Dana Point was able to help the Harper family return to the place they called home, safely and free from mold.
